Not to be considered as synonym of Peperomia latifolia Miq. as was published by Yuncker 1933: 29. Yuncker, and later authors, have followed a quite wide concept for this species, resulting in very different plants having been identified with this name. P. villipeduncula is the name of choice for specimens with suborbicular leaves, dense indument, red abaxial leaf surface, rather short spadices with thicker rhachis, a preference for higher habitats and a limited distribution (it only grows on Oahu whereas P. latifolia occurs on Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Maui, Molokai, Oahu).
Representative collections of P. villipeduncula, beside its type, are Degener 4354 (GH), Degener 8761 (GH), Forbes s.n. [28 Jul 1908] (NY), Fosberg 13755 (GH), Heller 2243 (BM), Morley 112 (AAU), Yuncker 3359 (F, NY, P, US) [Mathieu 2012, pers. comm.]
