Peperomia tetraphylla has to be considered as a 'new species' and not as a 'new combination' for Piper tetraphyllum Forst. In the protologue of Peperomia tetraphylla both Piper tetraphyllum and Piper reflexum are cited as synonyms 'with doubt'. This excludes them from being valid basionyms. [Kanchi Gandi, 2006, pers.comm.]. For the same reason, the type of Piper tetraphyllum (Forster s.n., Society Isl.) cannot be designated as the lectotype of Peperomia tetraphylla (as by Florence, 1997). The Beechey specimen at K has to be considered as the holotype.
