Peperomia obtusifolia is often confused with P. magnoliifolia. They are quite similar in their vegetative stage indeed. However, they are easily distinguished by their fruits. In P. obtusifolia, these are smaller, urn-shaped and show a long slender beak with a typical curl at the tip. The fruits are more densely disposed on the rachis than in P. magnoliifolia. Variegated cultivars all belong to P. magnoliifolia
